English as the National Language...

The immigration debate being what it is, the question as to whether we should make English the "official" language comes up every now and then. Last night, in the debate, the candidates were asked for a show of hands on the issue. Honest, I don't know what the outcome was...Obama jumped in and said the question was divisive, Clinton said English is the national language but not the official language and the camera angles were such that I'm pretty sure all the other candidates had left the stage for a bathroom break.

Clinton says we shouldn't make English the "official" language because, if we do, we wouldn't be able to print ballots in other languages.

Here is my question for the day...

Do we really want to print ballots in different languages? Is speaking English something that we should expect from our citizens? Currently, there is no such requirement although, it is my understanding that the new immigration bill, somewhere in the 400 pages of things that won't work, requires that immigrants learn to speak English if they are to be granted citizenship.

So, what do you think?

Only In America...

Yesterday, in Chris's Language post, we all kinda got off the language topic and went into the illegal immigration thing.  (OK, mostly you guys did, I was too busy waiting tables) But, I think we all agreed that shooting on site wasn't exactly the best solution.  Matt came up with arresting and convicting those who employ illegals..thereby eliminating the reason for them to come here.    Mike talked about how it was sooooo much worse in California, Arizona and Texas than anywhere else.  I"m not sure if I agree with that, but I really have no factual information to back my argument, so for now, I'll let his statement stand.   I think those states have many more illegals "passing through" on their way to other locations in the country.... but, again, I really don't know.  So, Mike, please note my objection for the record.

I like Matt's solution.  I don't think its a total solution... but I like it.  Even if you took a hard nose approach with employers starting today, that isn't going to allieviate us of all the illegals in this country now.  The quality of life here is so much better for them than what it was in their country...even without a job.  There are doctors that will place these people on worker's comp... these folks can get free medical care... free food.... and enjoy all the benefits of living here... all at a healthy cost to our wallets. 

Call me cold hearted, but I believe these people need to be rounded up and sent home along with jailing those Americans who employ them.  Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh.... too bad.  Just by taking the route they took to get here, they have broken our laws and as Matt said, we are a Nation of laws.  Why should illegals be exempt from being held to that standard?  Besides the fact that I"m tired of footing the bill.  It's not an ethnic matter..it's a money matter.  The democrats are whining about the deficit but then want to give financial assistance to Sally Sunshine who came into this country in the back of a U-Haul.  Why not take those billions and start whiddling away at this country's debt.  I mean, this really isnt rocket science here folks.

Look, maybe I'm oversimplifying matters here, but there's got to be a better way of dealing with this than what we are currently doing.... because right now, we just suck and it's costing you and me a fortune.

A Dallas hospital is planning to bill Mexico for the cost of healthcare on indigents who immigrate illegally from their country.

The plan, which also seeks payments from adjoining counties in Texas, has brought a negative response from the Mexican government, with a diplomat terming it "an act of discrimination."
    Last year, hospital officials said, Dallas County spent $76.5 million to treat people from outside Dallas. Of that, almost $27 million was not reimbursed.
    Much of the cost was for treating patients from adjoining counties in Texas, which Dallas County officials claim is unfair to local taxpayers.

Hugo Juarez, a consul official at the Mexican Consulate in Dallas, was visibly perturbed.

I bet ole Hugo was perturbed.... millions of Mexican citizens are pouring into this country and getting healthcare and social benefits handed to them on a silver platter.  Why does he want his country to be billed for these costs when that money can be slid into his pocket.

Puleeese....It's about time those on the  border do something about the freeloading of these illegals.  It's costing us a fortune.

I Find It Interesting....

...that with the number of immigrants who have come to this country "legally" from Korea and Italy and China and other countries around the world, none of them ever tried to rewrite the national anthem in their particular native language.  It's not until this country is overrun with "illegal" immigrants from Mexico that now we are faced with having to fight to keep the national anthem of this country in it's original form....the way it was written....in the language that was established for this country over 200 years ago. 

The spanish version of our nation's song was debuted on Ellis Island this weekend...and of course we got the usual.."this isnt political" bullshit....

"But the fact is that the worst thing you can do is make people leave their culture at the border, because that's not what made America great."

Singing a country's anthem in the language in which it was written and intended to be performed has absolutely nothing to do with making anyone leave their culture "at the border".  That is the biggest crock of crap I have ever heard....and all of you know it.

Would we sing France's anthem in Chinese?  Would we sing China's anthem in Italian?  Would we sing Italy's anthem in English?

NO....we wouldn't.

Leave our anthem alone.

Memorial Day...

Usually, we each write a post for Memorial Day. This year everything is up in the air. We've had some changes. Lisa is adjusting to her new life and her new schedule, Colonel Hunt has departed for bigger and better things and I am flat out with kids and work and trying to get my act together before I officially become old on Tuesday.

I sat and thought for a long time about what I wanted to write and no one thing jumped out at me. This Memorial Day is a jumble of thoughts, so that is what you are getting.

I am up early to take my kids to the parade. This year was unique in that I wasn't going to go. I have lunch plans with a friend from college and thought that I would skip it--except my kids won't let me. It's Memorial Day, they told me. It's important to go and say thank you and honor the soldiers, Mom. Every now and then, the stuff you do right comes back to bite you in the butt. :o)

Yesterday, on my way out of the grocery store, I tried to sneak by the two teenagers sitting there collecting money for what I assumed was some sports thing. I heard them ask the lady behind me if she wanted to donate a dollar to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. I turned around and went back to buy my poppies. They thanked me for my donation and gave my poppies for my kids and I. I wondered where the veterans were and why it was these disinterested kids doing the poppy thing. It's not like we are short on Vets...

My 9 year old has recently developed that 9 year old fascination with soldiers and war and killing the bad guys. I assume it would have happened even if we weren't currently at war. Young men doing amazing things is always fascinating. My Dad told him the story of how my Grandfather was wounded at the Battle of Metz and captured by the Germans. Eventually, he found his way home with a bum arm and a purple heart. I had never heard the story of how my Papa was wounded.

The Marines under in investigation for criminal acts in Haditha are on my mind lately. I am shocked and appalled and outraged...and heartbroken. Obviously, there can be no excuse for what they are accused of doing but there can be understanding. An impossible job in impossible circumstances...media reports say they were on their third tour...friends blown apart in front of you...constant fear that you will be next...a war where the enemy looks the same as the people you are trying to help...all of this...I think of the things we ask these young men and women to do and the price they pay for it. I think of the missing limbs and the scars we don't see.

I am thankful for our soldiers, impressed by my grandfather's service, proud that my son recognizes some of the great things our military does and saddened for the things that happen to our soldiers as a result of wars. I'm hopeful that one day none of it will be necessary but expect that it always will...

Say thanks to a soldier today. Say a prayer for them. Remember the fallen. Happy Memorial Day.

Mexico...

... the ultimate in hypocrisy.  While 10% of Mexico's population live and work here in the United States and while Mexico is pushing for the United States to allow all of it's citizens to continue to do so... it seems that they are not willing to give the same consideration to those who migrate to their country.

Boycott Mexico

OK.... I give up.  Last night Bill O'Reilly talked about a Mexican official threatening lawsuits if any member of the National Guard on the border arrested an illegal for crossing the border.  He then made a statement to this effect...and I paraphrase...

If one lawsuit is filed against the National Guard, I will call for a total boycott of Mexico and all Mexican products used in the United States

My problem is that I now can't find anything on this...and I so wanted to talk about it.

Help me out here.... if you saw this last night... let me know....
